WERE HOWARD CARTER AND LORD CARNARVON LOVERS?
In the book " Carnarvon, Carter and Tutankhamun Revisited; The hidden truths and doomed relationships ( 2016) author William Cross reappraises the question of whether there was a carnal relationship between Howard Carter and Lord George Carnarvon, the discoverers of Tutankhamun in Egypt 1922. Was their coupling only that of an archaeologist and rich patron, or were they intimate as 'lovers' or in love?
On 16 October 2016, London's DAILY TELEGRAPH suggested from the testimony of a former colleague of Carter's at the British Museum that the odd ball, quick- tempered Howard Carter was a homosexual. William Cross raised this question first in 2012 in his book " Lordy! Tutankhamun's Patron As A Young Man" ( Book Midden Publishing). The mockery of the two discoverers and Howard Carter in particular - with two women, including Lady Evelyn Herbert ( Lord Carnarvon's daughter) chasing his affections- in a ITV television series adds to the importance of putting the evidence forward for the historical perspective, especially as the centenary of the tomb's find approaches in 2022.
DOES THE SEXUALITY OF LORD CARNARVON AND CARTER MATTER?
William Cross writES
In the final analysis the sexual orientation of anyone should not be an issue.
Moreover if their relationship was homosexual it wouldn't of course add or subtract from their important archeological legacy, the discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun.
Yet, in the interests of scholarship and biography it's important to view facts in their proper context with accuracy & integrity.

Carnarvon, Carter and Tutankhamun Revisited
The hidden truths and doomed Relationships
New Book from William Cross
William Cross, author of Lordy! Tutankhamun’s Patron As A Young Man and the biographer of Almina, 5th Countess of Carnarvon as well as sketches of the 4th and 6th Countesses of Carnarvon enlarges his appraisal of the often topsy- turvey relationship between Almina’s first husband, George Herbert and his side-kick Howard Carter, co-discoverers in 1922 of the Tomb of Tutankhamun. What are the last remaining untold truths about their comradeship, the master-servant relationship between the patron and the archeologist, both lonely, cheerless figures with the tempers of Nile crocodiles? What elements of their personal stories have been suppressed? Why are there still so many anomalies ( read lies ) in the historical account of the time-line of the great discovery of King Tutankhamun that cannot be acknowledged?
